2102 in Retrospect

This could be the shortest, easiest "Retrospect" I'll ever do. All I really need to say to sum up the year is this:

2012 was the best year of my life thus far!

Unfortunately (?) for you, I've never really been one for "short" when it comes to words, so here's my 2012 in retrospect:

Welcoming in 2012 came with great uncertainty for me.  I was settling in nicely at my new (again) job at Greenberg's, meeting/making friends at my new church, and adjusting to life in the city once again.  On a slightly sour note, my year also began with my best friendship on the rocks.  Thankfully, after a little space and time, that, too, made some adjustments, and life smoothly went on.

Nothing of note happened so much in February, March, or April.  I spent time with my dear friends in Ankeny and generally enjoying life.

In May, I was prepared for everyone to leave me behind.  My casual friends were all either moving away or had drifted so far that I didn't really see myself spending all summer with them. My cousin George was leaving to spend a year in Peru (we went on our "River Adventure" as a farewell).  My best friend, Helen, was planning to spend summer at home, and I was left to fend for myself.

BUT... Helen stayed.  In fact, she not only stayed, but she moved in to the Yellow House.  Little did we know then just how significant that fact would be in our mundane little lives. In short, this simple twist of events gave us the greatest gift:  our "new family!" No one can replace our real family, but now we have a family in Des Moines, too!  I'm not sure when or how it happened, but suddenly Helen and I weren't alone anymore.  We had been adopted into our second family, and it was the best thing that could have happened to us!

June was spent taking care of our dear new brother, Caleb, as he recovered from surgery,  celebrating Carah & Yellow House Mom's birthdays, and making trips back and forth to the homestead.

July included our trip home with Caleb & Carah for the 4th of July weekend, Alexxa's 1st birthday, Trinity's Summer of the Gospel (including the very interesting car wash), watching my first ever marching band competition with Jodi, Fogell, and Caleb (SOOOO COOL!!!!), seeing Caleb sing with the All-State Jazz choir, seeing Tonic Sol-Fa in concert (amazing!!!), and me, as always, searching for a new job.  No new job.  Lots of tears and ice-cream, and it was time for vacation.

August was full of emotional upheaval. Helen announced while we were on vacation that she would be transferring to Cedarville University for Spring semester 2013.  Caleb left for Cedarville in mid August. April and Helen moved into their dorm room at Faith. And I was counting down the days I had left with my dear friend, Fogell, who left in early September for the Air Force. And with all these things came the end of the best Summer of my life. Lots of tears shed, both happy and sad.

As Summer cooled to Fall, I said "goodbye" to Fogell, and sent him on his merry way, sending behind him 25 letters to see him through what ended up being an extended boot camp. I started teaching children's church at Trinity (whenever I happened to be there- Helen and I spent a LOT of weekends at home this semester). Thursday evenings became "Yellow House" time for Helen and me. A football game, Helen's birthday, a trip to the Zoo, a basic training graduation, and one bridal bouquet catch later, Thanksgiving arrived, and with it... more change.

After exactly one year back at Greenberg's, God once again directed my steps in a different direction.  My last day at Greenberg's was also my first year anniversary.  Throughout the Summer and Fall, I became increasingly restless with my job.  I felt like what I was doing didn't matter; that I wasn't making a difference in anyone's life by doing what I was doing.  So, I made a switch.  The Monday after Thanksgiving, I started my new job at Tender Years Day Care!  What a GREAT change!!!  I now work full-time with a room full of 2-year-olds, and I LOVE IT!!!  God knew exactly what I needed.

December came with birthday cake, presents, a trip to the IMax by myself to see the Polar Express (Happy Birthday, Me!), Road to Bethlehem, and Christmas.  Caleb came home for a month, and I helped April and Helen pack up their dorm room- one to move home and one to move to Ohio (after a month at home). And then, I got the phone call that FOGELL WAS HOME FOR CHRISTMAS!!!  There is a very, very long version of that story, but the short one, which is included here for the enjoyment of all, is that I got my Christmas wish: Caleb & Fogell to be home.  That's all I wanted, and God said "YES!"  Best present ever!

And now, here I am.  I sit here thinking over the memories of the year, and I am overwhelmed at God's care for me.  At every turn, He has known my needs and provided above and beyond!  I'm ending the year more loved than I've ever felt in my entire life (not to say that I've ever felt unloved, but I'm SUPER blessed with the love in my life this year), closer than ever with my best friend/sister Helen, and completely in awe of the way God has worked in my life this year.

If 2013 is anywhere near as amazing as 2012 was, then I say "Bring it ON!"

Christmas is More

Some people say
I've got it all wrong
when I say Christmas is more
than just the birth of His Son.

It started with that,
yes, it's factual and true,
but thirty years later,
life changed for me and you.

This baby grew up
into a Man,
Who healed the blind and lame
with the touch of His hand.

He came here to seek
those that needed to be reached.
"I Am the Way,"
was the message that He preached.

But some didn't like
the way this made them feel,
so they came up with a plan
to capture, corrupt, and kill.

They put Him on trial-
"He is guilty!" was their cry.
He said, "Father, forgive them."
For His purpose was to die.

You see, this Man,
once a baby so small,
came to rescue us from sin
and be the Savior of us all!

But the story doesn't end there-
the best is yet to come!
They laid His body in a grave,
but my Savior wasn't done.

He conquered sin and death-
He rose up from the grave!
He crushed the head of Satan-
my soul and yours to save!

This story is the truth, my friend,
I pray that you believe it.
He's offered you this gift of life,
all you must do is receive it.

So as you open up your gifts
with friends and family,
I hope that you can share my joy-
He is more than just a baby!

Snow Day!

I have just discovered yet another reason why I LOVE being a "teacher": SNOW DAYS!  Working retail meant no snow days EVER, but especially not 5 days before Christmas!  BUT... day care doesn't care about how many days there are 'till Christmas; they care about keeping us all safe!

Working at a day care has given me so many fantastic opportunities.  I've always wanted to be a teacher, but God never opened the door for me to see that dream come true.

Until now.

And the best part about it is that I didn't even know it was happening!  It wasn't until I started working at the day care and hearing children, parents, and co-workers referring to me as the "new teacher" in the two-year-old room that I realized my dream was finally coming true.

I loved watching my kids get excited about the snow when it started falling yesterday!  I loved hearing them talk about it, seeing the joy and wonder on their adorable little faces, and once again seeing snow through the eyes of a child.

In other news, I spent my snow day hanging out with my sister, Helen (who is staying with me this week so she can work), watching movies, and cutting a Mr. & Mrs. Potatohead out of felt.  SUPER cute and easy! Thanks, Pinterest, for keeping me entertained today!

Finishing Up the Bucket List

A few weekends ago, Helen & I fulfilled #9 on my bucket list: see another Broadway show!  We saw Beauty & the Beast at the Civic Center, and it was SOOOOO GOOD!!!!

On Saturday, we FINALLY scratched the last item off the list, #6- Make a wish in a fountain:

The only other two items I didn't blog about were

#1- Take a walk in the rain:
(This was taken this summer. Such a great night!  We didn't actually take a walk this night, but we took a few other walks in the rain without pictures.  So this was taken as a concession to the undocumented outings!)

#10- Buy something worth wearing in a bright, bold yellow:
(I LOVE this sweater!  I wear it all the time!)

I also am happy to report that I fulfilled #2 (See an actual movie in the IMAX) TWICE!  It was the first thing I scratched off my list back in January, and it was also the "last" thing I scratched off my list!  Last week, I celebrated my birthday by going to see The Polar Express in the IMAX, which was SOOOOO COOL!!!

On a final note, the bucket list of 2012 was quite fun and entertaining.  I haven't decided yet whether or not I will do a 2013 bucket list (probably will, but we'll see), but I'm very glad I did it this year!  So many good memories were made!

Thanks for following along and enjoying the experiences with me!

Day 30- Daddy

First of all, can you believe I actually posted every single day this month ON TIME?!?!?!  I can't.  I seriously can NOT  believe I actually did it.  I have one I'm going to try for December, so we'll see how that goes.

Today I'm thankful for my dad.  He is amazing.  I know I brag on my parents all the time, but I honestly do have the best parents in the whole entire world!

My dad is always there for me... even though we live hours away from each other.  It's comforting to know I can call any time of the day or night, and he'll be there to help with whatever I need.

If my car alarm is waking the neighborhood at 2am, I call my dad.

If I'm sick and need cheering up, I call my dad.

If I need a friend because I'm having a crummy day, I call my dad.

If I have news to celebrate that just can't wait, I call my dad.

If I need spiritual counsel, I call my dad.

If I need advice about anything, I call my dad.

If I need a hug, I call my dad (or go find him if I happen to be home!).

My dad surprises most people.  When you first meet him, he seems quiet.  I assure you... he is NOT!  He makes me laugh with his silly antics. Even to this day, I still love to hear him read to me.  I love getting hugs and loveys from him.

I love you, daddy, and I'm SO thankful for you!!

Well... that's the last "Thankful Thought" for November 2012.  Come back tomorrow to see what I've got planned for December!

Thanks for reading with me! :)

Birthdays & Friends that make Family

Today I'm thankful for friends who have become family: our Yellow House family, Tom & Lori, and Randy & Rhonda.

Thursdays are Yellow House days, so tonight Helen and I went to help decorate for Christmas! Well... Let's just say we only put a very small dent in the decorating.... We may have had some electrical issues with the pre-lit [garage sale] tree, so we gave up on that for tonight.

Then, Tom & Lori and Randy & Rhonda came over to celebrate Tom's birthday. We had pie-cake and cheater fudge... Yum!! I'm thankful for the laughter and fellowship we were able to enjoy!

But most of all, I'm thankful for my South Side Family! Life wouldn't be the same without them... LOVE them all!!!

Day 28- Snuggles

As I mentioned, I recently started a new job working at a day care.  I was a little nervous about making the switch, but it turns out that it was SUCH a GOOD thing for me!

Today, I'm thankful for snuggles.  I love the little two-year-olds I've been working with this week (and I kinda hope I stay in that room!).  I've only known these little bundles of joy for three days, but already they've worked their way into my heart.  I'm thankful that I have a job that includes little people snuggles ALL DAY LONG.  I'm thankful for the little arms that wrap around my legs in joyful hugs.  I'm thankful for the little hands that hold mine just because they can.  I'm thankful for the warm, snuggley little bodies that curl up on my lap.  For a person like me who thrives on touch, I have been soaking up the snuggles this week!

I didn't even know I had been missing it.  Of course, I miss my nieces and their snuggles when I don't get to see them, but I didn't realize how badly I just needed the snuggles.  Several times today, I looked down at the little person in my lap and just had to hug him/her for his/her snuggles.

Snuggles are good for the heart!

Day 27- Tears

Today I'm thankful for my ability to cry.  I know... that sounds crazy.  Why on earth would I be thankful for tears?!

Well... I'm thankful that I can express emotions through tears.  If you think about it, tears are kinda cool.  You can cry when you're extremely happy.  Or you can cry when you're extremely sad.  Or when your disappointed.  Or when you're tired.  Or when you're overwhelmed. Or when you're lonely.  Or when something really great happens.

Tonight I'm thankful for tears brought on by both great memories and disappointing endings. I'm thankful for the tears because they remind me that life happens.  That we can't control it. But when God directs your paths, even the hard days can be good days.

I'm thankful for my tears because they are evidence of how deeply I care about people. I'm thankful for my tears because they are evidence of a tender heart. I'm thankful for tears because they are evidence of change.

So even though more often than not my tears are not happy/excited/really-great-happenings kinda tears, I'm thankful that even in the midst of tears, I can find my joy in Christ, my Savior & Friend.

Day 26- A NEW JOB!!!

Ok, so I know it's been a little while since I posted about the wild, crazy, and exciting things that are actually intentionally happening in my life, but here's one of those posts.

Today, I'm thankful for my NEW JOB!!  Yes, that's right folks (yes, Stevie Wonder... I said FOLKS... again...), today, I started my new job at Tender Year's Day Care!

"Day Care?!" you may ask.

Yes.  Day Care.

"Isn't that quite a drastic change from working at a jewelry store?!" you may ask.

Yes.  Quite Drastically Different.

I don't know why God chose to switch things up and move me to day care, but that's how He works.  He does things that don't necessarily make sense to us.  All I knew was that I wanted to do something that mattered with my life, and filing the paperwork for diamond sales just wasn't cutting it.  I've been looking for an avenue out for over six months, and God just kept closing doors.  Until now.  I hadn't even planned to stop at this particular day care; I only did so on a whim. Apparently, that "whim" was God's way of directing my life because I was pretty much hired on the spot (not quite because that's just not how life works these days, but pretty much on the spot).

AND.... I think I'm going to LOVE it there!  Today I worked with twelve 2-year-olds.  So. Much. FUN!  And when I left today, I actually felt like I had invested my time rather than just clocking in and clocking out.

So that's it.  That's the latest on life with Lacy.  Hopefully, it'll be another long while before I have the opportunity to post more life-changing stuff!

Day 25- Transportation

Well... due to a recent incident involving my dear car Iris and an actual deer, Iris is at the fix-it shop for the week. So today, I'm thankful that I have transportation this week. My sister has been driving my parents' car since she totaled hers in July. I drove Iris home this weekend to leave her at the shop. On Saturday, Helen finally found a car for herself! She bought a new-to-her red Grand Am, so we had transportation back to Ankeny. And since our parents' car was already up here (since Helen had been driving it), I have transportation this week!! Yay!!

Day 24- Food

Again, this may seem like a "duh!" kinda thankful, but I'm so thankful for food!  I'm thankful that I live in the United States where food is in high supply.  I'm thankful that when I eat, I can eat things that I actually enjoy.  I'm thankful for the abundance of food available to me on any given day, and if I should run out, I can hop in the car, drive to the store, and get more!

I'm thankful for Saturday night pizza.  As long as I can remember, Saturday night has been pizza night.  It was always the one meal of the week we didn't have to ask "what's cookin'?"  Pizza is my favorite food, so Saturdays were always a little extra special!

Day 23- Heat

Did anyone else notice the extreme temperature difference between yesterday and today?  Yikes!  It was crazy cold out there today!

I'm thankful for modern technology that allows us to have heat in our houses and vehicles.  I'm thankful that even on the coldest days, I can be warm and toasty inside.

Day 22- Alexxa, Lindsey, & the Crazy Vance Family

First of all, HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all my readers... the three that are out there.  I hope you've all had a wonderful day enjoying the blessings God has placed in your life over the last year.

Today, I'm doing a TRIPLE thanks post for several reasons:

1- It's Thanksgiving Day.
2- I'm quickly running out of days and still have so much for which to be thankful!
3- I never get tired of bragging on my fantastic family.

I'm thankful for my adorable niece, Alexxa.  She is 1 and 1/2 and the sweetest, most adorable little girl on the planet!  I'm thankful for her smiles and giggles.  I'm thankful for the sweet precious moments when she actually lets you cuddle her.  I'm thankful that even though she was born premature, she is developing normally.  I'm thankful that she doesn't live in California.  I'm thankful that I get to be Aunt Cece and snuggle, spoil, and enjoy my nieces!

I'm thankful for my older sister, Lindsey.  I'm thankful that she moved back to the area and that we get to see her and her children often. I'm thankful that we can share laughs and jokes together.  I'm thankful that she introduced me to our favorite TV show... because we get some of our best material from it!

And finally, I'm thankful for my wonderful, amazing, CRAZY, insane family!  Thanksgiving is always hosted at our house.  We fill every available space with cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparent(s), and friends.  I'm thankful that we're not one of those families [for the most part] that fights and hates.  I'm thankful that we ARE one of those families that laughs together and loves each other.  I'm thankful for my wonderful cousins and their spouses (the two that are married).  I'm thankful for the cousin's children, who are funny and fun and adorable!  I'm thankful that my grandpa got to spend another year with us.  I'm thankful that we still find it important to celebrate Thankgiving before Christmas and spend time together while we still can.

I truly am very blessed with the family I was born into, and I rarely take it for granted.  We're one of the rare exceptions out there, and I'm so thankful for each and every one of my family members!

Day 21- Leah... aka- Slappy

Of all my sisters, Leah is the most unique.  She's the only sports fanatic.  She's the only horse lover.  While the rest of us (Lindsey, Helen, & me) are quite similar, Leah does her own thing.  And the thing is... I'm THANKFUL for that!  It adds a little diversity to the family... spices up our lives!

She's just a freshman in high school this year, but she's playing Varsity basketball.  The rest of us never even played sports in high school that I remember.  She loves sports, and she's GOOD!

I love coming home to visit!  She always provides us with ample laughs.  I love that we get to call her Aunt Slappy.  I love when she says the most hilarious things, sometimes just plain old ridiculous, that make her laugh so hard she can't even finish her stories.  I'm telling you, that girl cracks me up!

I love that I can follow her via social media, such as Facebook and Pinterest, even though we're miles apart.  I love being able to see all the million and seven horse pins on Pinterest, and reading about school/basketball status updates on Facebook.

Most of all, I love the way she strives to be a witness/godly example wherever she goes. She doesn't mind being the "odd ball out" when it means she's doing the right thing or sticking up for her beliefs. I'm proud of the person she has become and is becoming.  Even though she's my baby sister, in some ways, I look up to her for her strength & courage.  Keep following God, Slappy!

Day 20- Family (Yellow House Edition)

Sometimes, we're blessed to grow up in a family where everyone loves each other, and family meals are mandatory.  We love and are loved in ways that only family can understand.  We pick on each other, laugh with and/or at each other, and cry together when necessary.  Family is one of God's greatest blessings.

Sometimes, you get double blessed. God gives you the gift of TWO families.

I, along with my sister Helen, am one of those double blessed people.

This summer, I started out thinking it was going to be a very long, very lonely couple of months.  But God had other plans.  For instance, my best friend/sister ended up NOT moving home; rather, she moved into the Yellow House. Over the course of June, July, & August, Helen and I found ourselves in a new family. Not that we aren't still part of our original family, but suddenly, there we were smack in the middle of ANOTHER family.

I can't thank the Lord enough for the delightful blessing of our Yellow House family.

I'm thankful for Father Dudley, who not only is our pastor, but who also loves us enough to pray for us, advise us, and tease us.  I'm thankful for his godly leadership and insight into our lives.

I'm thankful for Mom, who loves us as though we were her own. She shares our ups and our downs, our laughter and our tears.  She hugs us hello and goodbye each and every time she sees us, as though she may not get another chance ever.

I'm thankful for Chris, who is serving the Lord in Peru.  I don't know him all too well, but he's part of the family, so that means we love him!  I'm excited for his return next spring and the opportunity to get to know him better.  I'm thankful for his heart for God and his love for people.

I'm thankful for brother, Caleb, who is fastly becoming one of my best friends.  I'm thankful for his laughter and his hugs.  I'm thankful for his love of God and of music.  I'm most thankful for the encouragement he has been to me over the last few months, wherein phone conversations have taken place that have brought us closer together, even though we've been miles and miles apart.

I'm thankful for Carah, who provides lots of laughs, sweet smiles, and warm hugs.  I love listening to her sing whenever and wherever she pleases.  I'm thankful that she is still young enough to live at home, and that she will be for another five years or so.  I'm thankful for this wonderful little sister, who brings joy and happiness to my life!

I'm thankful for Grandma and Grandpa, as well.  Even though we only see them on Sundays, they've adopted us, too.  Gotta love Grandma! :)

I can't begin to explain what all this family means to me, but I can't imagine life without my Yellow House family.  God gave me a true blessing in you, and I praise and thank Him for you!!

Day 19- Friendship

This is a very broad "thankful," but today I'm thankful for friendship.  I'm thankful for my amazing friends that are like family, and family that are my best friends!

I'm thankful for the kind of friendships that can withstand months of separation, and they still come out stronger.  I'm thankful for friendships that pick up right where we "left off."  So many great friends all over the world right now, and I'm thankful for each and every one of them!

I'm thankful for the friendships I have found in the college crew at Trinity.  In the coming months, I think these friends will become even more precious to me as I try to fill the absence of my dear Helen.  I'm thankful for the crazy, wonderful times of fellowship we can have (such as last night... you know who you are)!

I'm thankful for the friendship I find in my parents and sisters, and those I find in my "parents" and "siblings" (the Petersons have adopted us).

I'm thankful, not only for great friends, but for friends that point me to the cross and my One True Friend!

Day 18- Church Family (Trinity Edition)

One year ago this Sunday, I visited Trinity Baptist Church for the first time.  I can't believe an entire year has passed since that first visit, but I'm SO thankful that I chose Trinity.  Or, rather, that Trinity chose me.  Or that God brought me and Trinity together.  :)

I'm thankful for the family I have found at our little church on the south side.  If I start naming specific people, I'll leave someone out, so I think I shall refrain (for the most part) from naming specifics.  I'm thankful for the support and love I find here, and the open arms that welcomed me in all those months ago. I'm thankful for the opportunity to help this past summer with Summer of the Gospel 2012.  I'm thankful for the opportunity I have now to teach children's church (whenever I happen to be around on a Sunday morning.  Helen and I have gone home a LOT this semester).  The kids have taught me so much about love, life, and friendship.

I will give a brief shout out to two people(s) that have become family to me:

(1) Tom & Lori-  I can't imagine Trinity... or life... without them now!  They're family.  They share our heartaches and happiness, our smiles and our tears. I love [the rare occasion] when Cole shows up at church, too, because it's just hard to be around that kid without smiling!

(2) The Petersons-  I'll brag about them more in another post, but they're family too.  Pastor Dudley is a wonderful pastor, and every message I've ever heard him preach has made me sit up and pay attention- always something to take away from it!  The Petersons have become a huge part of my life, and I can't imagine life without them.

Today at Trinity, we had our annual Thanksgiving dinner.  It's so fun to see the church family enjoying a meal together!  I'm thankful that the college crew is around once again, and I'm thankful for Sunday afternoons when we can laze around and enjoy being friends.

God has blessed me with not one, but TWO fantastic church families!  I'm thankful for all of my family, and love them all dearly!

Day 17- John 3:16

I'm thankful that even on the worst days, I never ever have to worry about losing my Salvation.  I'm thankful that in the midst of days like today, I can turn to my heavenly Father for comfort, support, and guidance.  My relationship with God is always in need of improvement, but He never leaves me or forsakes me.  No matter how sinful I am, or how much I whine, or how often I cry for no apparent reason.

I'm thankful that God sent His only Son to take MY place on that old rugged cross.  He loves me SO MUCH!  He loves me more than any person on Earth ever can!

Life is overwhelming sometimes... that's just how life works.  When I'm overwhelmed, I turn to my Savior.  When I'm hurt and disappointed, I turn to my Savior.  When I'm tired and feel pressed on every side, I turn to my Savior.  Why? Because He loves me unconditionally and has the power to change my life.

Today, I'm thankful that

"...God so LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."

John 3:16

Day 16- Safety

Is there EVER a dull moment with me?  Early Monday morning, as most of you may recall, I had a little issue with Iris (my car) and her non-stop LOUD horn at 2 a.m.  Well tonight...

I picked up Carah & Jessica at the Yellow House after work, and we met Helen at my house in Ankeny, where we began our journey out to Jordan Creek (yes... I left work at Jordan Creek to turn around and go BACK to Jordan Creek) for the annual Tree Lighting & fireworks!  Much anticipated by all, you can certainly imagine the excitement.  You can probably also imagine how that excitement might be dimmed when you hit a deer with your car.  Yes.  I hit a deer (I think) on my way out to Jordan Creek.  I didn't even see it... I only know it was there because I HIT IT.  Thankfully, my dear Iris still runs just fine, even though her hood is a little mashed up and my driver's side headlight needs some TLC.

In the midst of all THIS commotion, I got a phone call from my dear brother Dave, who happened to be out at Jordan Creek with his wife and son. SCORE!  So, I had him take a quick look at my car to make sure it wasn't anything too drastic, which it isn't.

So... I'm thankful that:
1- No one was hurt... well except the deer.. and Iris a little.
2- Iris isn't suffering too much, and probably won't cost me too much to have her repaired.
3- Dave was there to assist me in my time of need (which he seems to do a LOT where Iris is concerned!).
4- Helen & I were able to spend some quality time with Carah & Jessica tonight.
5- Yellow House mom didn't revoke my chauffeur privileges.
6- Iris' horn thing was disconnected due to previous misfortune, so the deer incident didn't set off the horn!
7- My daddy is always just a phone call away.
8- Today was a GOOD day!

Here are a few pictures from the fireworks, which we sat directly beneath (SO COOL!!!!):

Day 15- Modern Technology

I'm supposed to be in San Antonio.  At least... that's what I think.  Obviously I'm not there, and everything happens for a reason.  There are LOTS of reasons I'm not in San Antonio.  I keep trying to remind myself of these reasons... it's not really convincing me.

Anyhow, since I can't be THERE, I'm glad that modern technology can bring THERE to ME!  Facebook and texting have helped me feel connected to the things I'm missing out on.  I get to see pictures and updates whenever I want, and I can shoot a text to my brother at any time!

I'm thankful for the convenience of modern technology such as facebook, texting, etc. My sister and nieces lived in California for a few years, and these technologies kept us connected.  They keep me connected to my dimpled darling cousin, George, who is in Peru (and has been since May).  They keep me connected to my parents (whom I see every few weeks, but they get my blog updates e-mailed to them so...).  Texting (more than Facebook) keeps me connected with the best little brother in the whole wide world, who is in Ohio (well... he's not in Ohio at this very moment... he's in Texas, but yeah...).

While I'm still a HUGE fan of snail mail, and I think that a personal, hand-written letter means so much more than a quick e-mail or whatever, today, I'm VERY thankful for modern technology!

Day 14- Prayer

I'm thankful that I can pray whenever and wherever, any time of the day or night. Sometimes life is a waiting game, and during those times, it's hard to be patient.  But I'm thankful that I have a Heavenly Father that knows the plans He has for me, and that those plans are for a future and a hope- for my good.

I'm thankful that God doesn't always give me what I ask for.  More times than I can count, I have ended up being thankful that God didn't "grant my request."  I'm also thankful for the times that He has answered the way I hoped.

Mostly I'm thankful that I don't have to be burdened with the details of life- that I can "take it to the Lord in prayer!"

Day 13- Dr. Stevie Wonder

I'm thankful that my best friends are also my family, and today, I'm specifically thankful for my dear cousin April, aka Dr. Steeeve/Stevie Wonder.  She is just right at a year younger than I am, and she has been one of my best friends since we were old enough to know what friendship was.  Steve keeps me in laughs, doctors me when necessary, and brings exceeding joy to my life.  I can't imagine life without her!

I'm also thankful that for this semester, Steve & Helen have been able to room together at Faith, and that they just live a few minutes away from my house.  It's been a real treat getting to spend time as the fabulous three [it's usually the fabulous four, but George is in Peru!].

Love you, Dr. Stevie Wonder!!

PS- I'm also thankful for her new boyfriend, J-Dog, who gave her a book about "Stuff Christians Like," which supplies us with endless laughs! RAZZLE-DAZZLE!

Day 12- Family (My House Edition)

Today I'm thankful for my "family" at "my" house.  I'm thankful for Bob & Joy and the encouragement they are to me.

I'm thankful that Bob is always so willing to help me with my high-maintenance vehicle.  Last night, for instance, when Iris decided to have a melt down at 2am, he helped me fix the problem, even though it was FREEZING outside.  I feel like I'm constantly needing his assistance when it comes to dear ol' Iris.

I'm thankful that Joy always has a kind word to say and a smile on her face.  I'm thankful that she didn't throw me out by my earlobes last night when my car horn attempted to wake the entire neighborhood!

Most of all, I'm thankful for a warm, safe, HAPPY place to live.  Even though we don't see all that much of each other, I love knowing that they're just a few feet away. The house just feels empty when they're gone, and that makes me that much more thankful for the place God has provided for me to live.

Day 11- Church Family (Farmington Edition)

Today I'm thankful for the dear church family of my childhood.  Helen and I have made a lot of trips home for the weekend this semester (since she's headed to Ohio in January... but we don't talk about that), and one of the perks of being home on the weekends is getting to spend a little time with our "home" church family.

Several years ago, maybe even when I was in middle school, my parents started hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for the senior saints some evening in November.  Over time, it morphed into a church-wide thing, and now, every year, we take a Sunday afternoon before Thanksgiving and have dinner together.  My parents {almost} always prepare enough turkey to feed a small army, and everyone in the congregation brings along sides to share.  Oh, and also a large quantity of desserts. :)

Thankfully, today was that day.  We enjoyed a meal around the tables of fellowship, visiting with friends of all ages.  As I looked around the room today, I saw the faces of those that helped me grow into the person I am today: Sunday school teachers, VBS leaders, youth group helpers, ladies that taught me what it looks like to be a servant in the kitchen, men that taught me how I serve better in the kitchen than I do helping with projects (I'm rarely allowed near the tools... let alone allowed use them!), my pastor, and many who taught me what genuine Christianity looks like.

No matter where I go or how far away from home I may end up, First Baptist Church of Farmington will always be my home church, and I'm thankful for the "family" God gave me there!

Day 10- Saturdays

Yes, I admit it.  I love lazy Saturdays.  The kind where absolutely nothing is required of you and you can just sit around the house being lazy as all get out.  Today is one of those kinda Saturdays, and so I'm thankful for the blessing of down time.  I'm also thankful that on the blessed occasions I get to spend the weekend at home, I get the privilege of spending most of the day with my adorable nieces, Bethany & Alexxa.  Oh, and I'm also thankful that I got to play the piano for a few hours today... gotta gear up for Road to Bethlehem in a month!

Day 9- Bethany

It may be short and sweet, but today I'm thankful for my darling niece Bethany.  Helen and I came home today from Des Moines for the weekend, and the first thing I heard when I walked in the door was "Aunt Cece!!!!"  followed quickly by a hug from my biggest fan!  I love this little girl, and I can't imagine life without her.  She's sweet and caring and brings light and laughter to our family.  Love you, Kiddo!

Day 8- Books

I'm thankful for books.  I'm thankful that I can read.  I'm thankful that when I read, for those few minutes or hours, I can step into someone else's life.  Reading is one of the greatest adventures of all time because you can go anywhere, be anything, and do everything all from the comfort of your own home... or the coffee shop... or the bookstore!  I just recently read Karen Kingsbury's new book The Bridge, and it was wonderful!  A special thanks to my dear Lori for lending it to me!

Day 7- Money

I know, this sounds greedy and pathetic at the same time, but today was pay day for me, so I just finished paying my first-half-of-the-month bills.  I'm thankful that I have a job that provides me with enough income to pay my bills (on time even!) and still (sometimes... not always) have a little left over!  God always provides what I need, and usually above and beyond.  I'm thankful that I didn't have to wonder where the money was going to come from to pay my bills this month, and I realize that not everyone has the same luxury.  I also realize that at any moment God could take away this luxury, and I could find myself without a job.  I suppose I should have actually said "Day 7- A Job," but that would put too much emphasis on the job (and probably give the false impression that I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job... which I don't... I just usually ENJOY my job.  Not the same thing).

Numbers 8 & 10

Two posts in one day!  I know... ridiculous! Do I expect you to read both of my posts today? Not really. Do I want you to?  Obviously, or I wouldn't have posted it!

On Saturday, I scratched two more things off my bucket list:

#8- Eat a meal at the Bravo! Cucina Italiana (the Italian restaurant out at Jordan Creek)

#10- Buy something worth wearing in a bright, bold yellow.

Helen and I had a sister date day on Saturday.  We started out at Jordan Creek with the intent to start our Christmas shopping.  She bought nothing at JCM; I bought four shirts for less than $20 total, one of which was a bright AWESOME yellow sweatshirt!

We took an early afternoon break for lunch at the Bravo! which was YUMMY!!!  I was expecting outrageous prices, but it was actually comparable to Olive Garden.  We split an order of grilled chicken pesto spaghetti, and we both walked away MORE than full, for a total of $15.  Score!

After we waddled away from lunch, we hit Old Navy, and then proceeded on to Valley West Mall.  Once again, Helen bought nothing, and this time I joined her.  We did, however, have a marvelous time exploring the fantastic kids store!  So many cool things from our childhood- puppets, paper dolls, and color forms!  So much fun!

Then Helen finally bought something when we got back to Ankeny! She bought the makings for several Christmas presents, which are gonna be FABULOUS!  We then returned to my house for pizza and a movie.

It was a great day, and probably one of the last sister dates we'll have before she leaves in January to go to Cedarville (in Ohio).  I'm gonna miss her like crazy, but memories like these will keep me company.

:)

Day 6- Health

Far too often, I take this one for granted.  I'm thankful for my health!  Today I was a little under the weather, so I took a sick day.  I woke up tired with a sore throat and a headache. It is days like these that remind me how thankful I am that the majority of my days are spent in good health.

I have a fully functioning body, including all limbs and extremities.

I am not battling cancer, chronic disease, or any other life-changing health issues.

I do not have to take daily medications to function.

I have full use of my senses and mental faculties (no laughing on the second part).

Sure I have aches and pains from time to time, but for the most part, I have great health, and I'm SO THANKFUL!!!

AND, when I do happen to be ill, I'm thankful for things like orange juice, hot tea with honey, yogurt, vitamins, and cough syrup.  When I'm sick this time of year, I'm also thankful for my small collection of Christmas movies, which kept me company today.

Oh, and I'm also thankful for clean sheets, which somehow always manage to make me feel better!

Day 5- Snail Mail

I love writing letters!  There isn't much more personal than a hand-written letter sent via snail mail. I've been especially thankful for this  mode of communication over the last eight weeks, as it has been my only means of communication with my dearest AB Lusk, who will graduate (if things go as planned) next Friday from Air Force Basic Training!  Without snail mail, I would have been completely detached from him, so I'm thankful for the simple pleasure of being able to write a letter (or 21, as the count continues) and drop it in the mail whenever I want.

:)

Day 4- My Mom

I'm thankful for my mom.  Over the last year, she and I have gotten very close, and she's a close second to Helen in the Best Friend contest.

I'm thankful that I can talk to her about any/everything.

I'm thankful that she endures 2 1/2 hour long phone conversations with me, even when these "conversations" consist of me talking through things with myself.

I'm thankful that I can look to her for advice and guidance.

I'm thankful that she loves me unconditionally.

I'm thankful that she expects me to do the right thing, and that she expects me to follow God's leading.

I'm thankful that she supports my decisions even when she doesn't understand them.

I'm thankful for the way she prays for me on a daily basis, and not only for me, but for those I love.

I'm thankful that she's involved in my life even though we're miles apart.

I'm thankful that she teaches me by example how to be a servant, a loving wife, and a good mother.

I'm thankful that when I was 4 years old, my mom faithfully taught me of my need for a relationship with Christ, and that on the night before my 5th birthday, she sat with me when I prayed to accept God's gift of Salvation!

I'm thankful that God chooses are parents for us because He chose to bless ME with the best mom!

I LOVE you, mom!

Day 3- My Best Friend

I have the best family in the whole entire world, but today I'm especially thankful for my middle sister "twin" Helen. Not only is she my sister, but she's the best friend I've ever had! Today we had a sister date shopping (which if you know Helen at all, shopping with me voluntarily means she really must love me) and eating Italian food and wathing FRIENDS and a movie. I can't even begin to imagine what life will be like in two months when I send her off to Ohio. I sure am gonna miss her!!

Friday, November 2, 2012

Day 2- Peace

Today I'm thankful for the peace God gives.  When faced with life and it's many decisions, I'm thankful for the peace that God gives when you follow His plan for your life.  I'm thankful that I don't have to sit around wondering all the time "Did I do the right thing?"  "Is this going to turn out ok?"  "Will I regret this later?"  There's nothing that compares to the peace that washes over you when you've made a decision that reflects God's plan for your life.

Thankful Thoughts 2012

Last year, I participated in a blog/facebook activity wherein you post about something for which you are thankful for every day of November.  I really enjoyed doing it because it helped me to realize how much I took for granted that I should be thankful for, so I decided to do it again this year!  If you haven't tried it before, why not try it this year?

Day 1: A Place to Live

Too often, I take for granted having a warm, cozy place to live. I'm so thankful for my cozy little bedroom!  Bob & Joy have been so good to me, and I'm thankful for their willingness to allow me to occupy their basement.

Oh, and I'm extra thankful today because Bob & Joy shared their dinner with me!  Bob made a super yummy cheesy potato casserole with sausage... simply scrumptious!

Night Eyes, # 7, & A Wedding Celebration

Last Thursday, I took advantage of an opportunity to go trick-or-treating at the zoo.

Yes. The Zoo.

Yes. Trick-or-treating.

#7 on my 2012 Bucket List is "Go to the Zoo." So... lucky for me, I finally scratched that one off!  Considering that October is almost behind us, I was pretty sure that #7 would not be getting checked off the list, but thanks to the Blank Park Zoo's annual "Night Eyes- Merry not Scary" trick-or-treating event, I can now say that I've been to the zoo this year.  And let me tell you- it was a BLAST!  Helen and I took Carah with us for a little Yellow House Sisters outing.  It rained all day long, but for the hour we were at the zoo, it barely sprinkled!  I can definitely say it was just what I needed last week!

Then, Helen and I got another weekend at home!  I had a dentist appointment and a chiropractor appointment on Monday, so I got a {much needed} long weekend.  We went to a wedding Saturday evening at our home church.  The ceremony was very sweet. I enjoyed getting to celebrate with our church family!  Oh yeah- and I totally caught the bouquet at the "All the Single Ladies Bouquet Toss!" First time ever to catch one of those things!  I may or may not have totally snatched it just before it landed in a little girl's outstretched hands, but hey... she was like five!  And I'm... well... NOT five.  AND I caught it while holding an 18 month old! :)

Over all, it was quite a fantastic weekend!

Falling for Autumn

I don't know about you, but every year I fall in love with autumn all over again!  I just love the crisp Fall air, the scent of pumpkin spiced goods filling my happy little home, wearing scarves again, and the promise of happy holidays to come!

And then last night, it rained!  I LOVE sitting inside all curled up in a blanket listening to the rain on a cool fall evening!

Fall is one of my favorite times for many reasons, but one of the best things about fall is the day set aside for giving THANKS to God for one of the best presents he ever gave me: my little sister Helen, who also happens to be my bestest friend in the whole wide world!

This year, we celebrated her birthday with a hot dog roast & hayride with some friends and family.  As always, good times were had by all (just to clarify- they were good times... but not THE good times- haha!).

Almond-n-Cream

Well, folks (yes, April... I said FOLKS), fall has apparently arrived, and I couldn't be any more happy.  I LOVE this weather!

Anyhow, one of my favorite things about fall is the great smelling foods/drinks.  We haven't made this for years, but we used to have it quite often when we were little, so I made a batch today.  And let me tell you, it  is delicious!  We call it "Almond-n-Cream."

Almond-n-Cream (Drink Mix)
1c butter/margarine
1c sugar
1c packed brown sugar
2tsp Almond extract
2c vanilla ice cream (soft)

In a sauce pan over low heat, stir together butter and sugars until melted. Pour into a large mixing bowl; add ice cream and extract.  Beat on medium speed for 1-2 minutes or until smooth, scraping the bowl often.

Makes 4 cups of mix

To make:  Spoon 1/4 cup of mix into a mug and fill with boiling water.  Stir well.  Top with whipped cream and nutmeg.

Enjoy!

And Suddenly We're All Grown Up

As children, Hannah, April, and I were practically inseparable.  We spent many weekends together playing Little House on the Prairie, School, and having Tea Parties.  We watched movies and sang songs.  We stayed up to the wee hours of the morning and slept late.  Life was good!

This weekend, April and I (along with the rest of my fam) headed out to Nebraska to see Hannah get married.  I hadn't seen Hannah since graduation from College- two and a half years ago!  I can't believe how fast time has passed us by!

The wedding was beautiful!  As soon as Hannah appeared at  the back of the sanctuary, I started crying.  She was SO BEAUTIFUL!  And in that moment, it hit me: we're all grown up.  Somewhere along the way we left behind the childhood joys of "Wedding Day," and we're now grown women attending the real-life "Wedding Day" of one of our own!

Hannah was so happy to see us there, and it was such a special day for all of us.  April and I went with my parents and two younger sisters, and of course, we crammed ourselves into one pew at the wedding, even though we didn't exactly fit.  What a fantastic day!

I'm not sure when exactly it happened, but here we are... all grown up!  I LOVE you girls and will forever cherish the memories we made together as children and the memories we have yet to make as adults!

Reflection

Lately, with all the changes goin on around me, I've been very reflective.  For the most part, I've been reliving my summer memories over and over again in my head.  I've gone through the hundreds of pictures I took this summer dozens of times in the last few weeks... just remembering.

But then it hit me.

I shouldn't be here.  If life had gone according to MY plan, I would probably still be living at home, working for the church, and enjoying life in a very different way.

Where was I a year ago?

Well, one year ago today, I was sitting in class at Iowa Wesleyan College, convincing myself that I belonged there... that I COULD learn to speak Spanish... that I WOULD graduate in two and a half years with a teaching degree.

I was praying desperately for my sister Helen and I to find jobs in our local areas.  I was missing her beyond belief as she began school at Faith, and I started at IWC without her.

I was enjoying having my big sister, her first grader, and her new baby living with us.  I was caught up in several new TV shows, including Pan Am and Once Upon a Time.

I was helping with AWANA at church, as well as playing the piano regularly, and teaching Sunday School.

I was working hard at making my mom my new best friend.  I was working hard at being friends with my littlest sister Leah.  I was working hard at being a good friend to my cousin April and my neighbor Sarah. I was looking to former teachers-turned-mentors for advice in my schooling.

I was pouring time and energy (both well spent) into growing in my walk with God.   I was praying for guidance and strength in my new endeavour with school.  I was seeking wisdom and assurance that I was doing what He wanted me to do.

REALLY?!  All of that was only a year ago?  It feels like forever.  Looking back now, I can see how insanely much I've grown this year. Now, I can say with confidence that:

1. I'm exactly where God wants me to be.
2. I'm a stronger person because of the past year.
3. I'm closer to all three of my sisters now than I was then.
4. My mom is one of my best friends in the whole entire world.
5. Several of the key people in my life... I didn't even KNOW them a year ago. Now I can't imagine life without them.
6. I have no doubt whatsoever that I did the right thing by walking away from teaching.
7. Somehow, I've lost weight. Random, but true!
8. God brings things in to our lives to grow us, stretch us, and make us into the people He wants us to be... even if it "hurts."
9. God will use whomever He chooses, even unexpected people, to bless our lives.
10. God has a plan for this next year of my life.  I can trust Him COMPLETELY, without worry, to do His will in His time.

If I hadn't paused to reflect on where I was a year ago, it would be easy for me to panic and fear the unknowns of this coming year.  There are so many potential life changes coming my way (most of which I embrace whole heartedly!), and it would be so easy to worry and fret!  BUT... looking at the way God led me from where I was a year ago to where I am now?  That's what gives me the confidence to embrace life.  To live without fear.

As my Yellow House brother recently reminded me:  You don't have to fear the unknown because you know the God who knows the unknown.

I'm excited to see whereGod takes me, and where I'll writing from NEXT September!

Patiently Waiting

I Corinthians 13:4a & 7 have become kind of like a life anthem for me lately.  The words of these very special verses are on constant replay in my head.

"Love is patient.... Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things."

Patience is not something that comes easily to me.  I'm not known for being a patient person, although I'm learning and growing every day.

There are so many things I want to know RIGHT NOW, but I know I'll have to be patient and wait for God to reveal His plan.  I have to be patient as time passes and life changes.  I have to be patient and wait.

But this waiting is a good thing.  It will give me the opportunity to learn what it looks like when love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. The next few months aren't going to be easy. It feels like there is a gaping hole in my chest, and while I don't see this changing, I hope and pray that this time of waiting will also be a time of great learning.

And So It Begins

For anyone that knows me, this may come as a shock.  Amidst all the changes going on in my life right now, I haven't really had a huge meltdown yet.  Sure, I've cried, but it's mostly been silent tears slipping down my cheeks a few at a time and [for the most part] short lived.

That's about to change.

I can feel it.

Other Caleb leaves for basic in a week, and I'm not ready.  I'm just not.  His departure is the "big finale" end to the best summer of my life. Soon, all I'll have is the precious memories I made this summer and my best friend/little sister Helen.

It keeps me awake at night, lying there thinking about how much I miss Little Brother and how much I already miss Other Caleb.  It feels like there's a gaping hole in my chest, which I suppose makes sense considering that a tiny part of my heart is in Ohio, and another tiny part of my heart will soon be in Texas. It hurts.

So, since I haven't really had one of my famous [at least in our family] meltdowns yet, I've been just waiting for it to happen. I know it's coming. I know it will happen when I least expect it. And I know I'll wake up the morning after with the worst headache in the world [we call it a crying hangover in our familiy... worst EVER!].

For instance, on my way to work this morning, "Stayin' Alive" came on the radio, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there I was with more tears streaming down my face.  I don't know why, but memories of a summer road trip to Mason City were suddenly so vivid and clear in my mind, it overwhelmed me.

And so begins the emotional journey that is sure to cover the next few months.  Missing people, re-living memories in my mind (and out loud with my best friend), and patiently waiting for what's next.

*Be Advised- hugs will be much needed AND much appreciated over the next few months.  They may even be solicited. Just FYI.

Excuses

Where on earth has Lacy been?  I know it's been a few weeks since my last post, but I promise you, I have a good excuse.  Several of them, actually.

Excuse #1: Family Vacation!

On August 4, we piled into the family van and headed west to see my mom's side of the family in Nebraska and Colorado.  We spent Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and most of Tuesday in Po-Dunk, Nebraska, with my grandparents and cousin. Tuesday night, we headed to my favorite place in the world: Aunt Lisa & Uncle Dave's in Denver.  We spent Wednesday in Colorado Springs visiting Garden of the Gods and Focus on the Family.  Thursday morning we headed back to Po-Dunk, and spent the evening with my mom's little brother and his family and our grandparents.  Friday, Great Uncle Wally & Great Aunt Marlene (the BEST great uncle and aunt EVER) came down for the day.  Saturday, we piled back into the family van, and headed back to Des Moines. Whirlwind trip? YES!  Totally worth it?  YES!  Too much time with the family? NEVER!

Excuse #2:  Caleb is Gone! :(

On Tuesday, I spent the evening with my Yellow House family.  Why?  Well... Because on Wednesday, they took off on an adventure to deliver my best little brother to Cedarville.  So Tuesday night was filled with "family" time.  And then... the goodbye. The tearful, sad, painful goodbye.  Three months ago, I had NO IDEA that this young man would become such a huge part of my life, but the fact is that he did.  I can't imagine life without my favorite little brother, and while I know that time will go fast, and he's where he needs to be, and that he's gonna grow tremendously over the next few months... well.... I already miss him more than I can say.  And Thanksgiving can't come fast enough. Thankfully, there's skype, texting, phone calls, and facebook! I love you, Buddy!  :)

Excuse #3:  Other Caleb is Leaving, too!

In two very short weeks, Other Caleb, AKA Fogell, is leaving for basic training.  Yeah... another HUGE part of my life is being ripped away from me.  Only THIS part of my life won't have access to texting, or skype, or even phone calls.  Nope, this girl will soon be doing one of the things she does best: writing letters. Letter after letter.  Day after day.  This is where actions speak louder than words. It's easy to say now, while he's still here, that I'll write faithfully with encouraging words and hope, but once he's gone... that's when my words will mean the most because my "words" WILL be actions.

So there you have it.  The latest with Lacy.  Excuses and all.

Here are a few pictures from vacation.... Enjoy!

God Knows

Do you ever have trouble trusting that God knows what He's doing?

I do. More often than I care to admit.

I've been thinking a lot over the last week or so about one thing in particular.  Something God brought into my life unexpectedly.  Something definitely outside of my comfort zone for several reasons.

Sometimes God asks us to do things that we don't understand.  Sometimes He asks us to do things that we're afraid of.  Sometimes He asks us to do things that scare us.  Sometimes He gives us the opportunity to do something that will grow us and stretch our faith in ways we didn't even know we needed.

God knows what He's doing.  Even when we don't.

Recently God has given me a blessing that was (1) VERY unexpected, (2) VERY much outside of my comfort zone, and (3) VERY {potentially} exciting!

God knows what He's doing, and I guess for now, my only responsibility is to trust Him!

Stay Tuned! :)

Patience Practice

Isn't God amazing?!

I love how He always knows just exactly what we need and when we need it.  Always.

I started out the summer wondering how on earth I was going to survive the three months when the college kids would be gone. Helen was planning on moving home.  I was feeling lonely.

Then, Helen decided to stay.  And the Petersons decided to adopt her.  And let's be honest here... Helen and I are kind of a package deal.  So in adopting her, they (unknowingly) adopted me too!  I can't thank God enough for them!  They really do love us!  And we love them!  Pastor Dad & Mamma P get excited with us when big wonderful stuff happens in our lives, and they comfort us when big BAD stuff happens.  God knew I needed a local (and sometimes loco) family!

Anyhow...

Saturday morning, I woke up thinking I knew exactly how my day was going to go: Summer of the Gospel car wash from 10am-5pm, then family time with Helen and the P's from 5-?.  I knew what I wanted out of life, and I knew who I wanted to hang out with all day.

And then... right there in the middle of the day... God changed my direction.  Just randomly and (for the most part) completely unexpectedly.  God dropped a blessing in my lap about 2:30 in the afternoon, and suddenly I no longer knew what life was supposed to look like!  You know the feeling... it throws you off completely and, even though you're totally fine with this change of direction, you still walk around kind of dazed and stunned... and totally in awe of the Creator's sense of humor.

One of the things I've really been struggling with this summer is patience.  I just didn't know it. Well, apparently God decided it was time for me to get clued in to His summer lesson plans for me.

Lessons A, B, & C: Learn to be Patient.

Patient in waiting for God's plan to be revealed.

Patient in waiting for God's perfect timing.

Patient in learning how to love others.

A wonderful person who is quickly becoming like a brother to me challenged me to memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4.  The first three words are these: Love is patient.

That's it.

Just three little words.

Love.  Is.  Patient.

And since Sunday night when he challenged me (and the entire Summer of the Gospel group) to memorize this verse, I have had these three words on a constant replay in my mind.

Love is patient. Love is patient. Love is patient.

Monday afternoon, God chose to surprise me yet again.  And, just like the Saturday blessing, this surprise also requires a bit of patience.

And now, here I sit... just waiting.  Patiently waiting for God to show me what HE has for me.  Patiently waiting for God to show me HIS perfect timing.  Patiently waiting on God to reveal to me how HE wants me to love others.

At least God provides encouragement during this waiting season!  My mother for instance, who said to me yesterday (after hearing about my second "patience practice" blessing), "Honey!  I don't even know how to pray for you anymore. I just get started praying for one thing, and then another thing comes long...  I guess I'll just keep praying for it ALL!"

So... I bet several of you are now wondering with piqued curiosity what these two "patience practice" blessings are.  Well...

You'll just have to be PATIENT!  :)

Don't Blink

Last night did NOT go as planned.  I was supposed to go over to the Yellow House to watch a Christmas movie with my favorite Helen.

BUT... when I texted her to verify this plan about 3pm, she informed me that instead of a nice, quiet movie night, we were having nice, chaotic video game night. Now before you start thinking that I was upset and not ok with this, I must tell you that this little tid bit of information actually excited me!

You see, our summer brother couldn't believe that we'd never played video games ever before in our lives, and he insisted that sometime before the summer was out (at which time he will be leaving us to go... well... far away... to college... like that's important or something...) we would play video games.  So last night was the night.

When I arrived at the Yellow House, game-mode was in full swing.  It was a full house!  Summer brother Caleb, his friends Patrick & Matthew, and our friend Fogell were all present.  I found my sister sitting in a chair working on some crazy little gameboy-type thing (probably it wasn't a gameboy, but... how would I know!), and Carah had Brooke over. So much fun!

Since I didn't actually get to play anything until about 10pm, I just sat on the sofa and observed.  And as I sat there,  it hit me: this won't last forever.  In a few short weeks, Caleb will leave for college, and Helen will be back in school. Shortly thereafter, Fogell will leave for basic.

And where will I be?  What will change in my life?

Nothing.  I will go back to being the responsible adult I pretend to be.  My evenings will be *hopefully* filled with letter writing and skype dating and phone calling and texting, trying desperately to hold on to these newfound friends who are like family.

As I pondered these things, beginning to feel sad and depressed, I took a good look around me.  I realized that NOW isn't the time to feel sad and depressed.  No!  NOW is the time for me to soak in all these precious little moments, the sweet memories of summer and friends and family and fun. NOW is the time to burn all these moments into my memory so that in a few short weeks when life does a 180, I will still have these memories to keep me company.

So for the next few weeks as life goes on around me, I have determined to not focus on what's coming, but rather to focus on what IS... to make memories- good ones- and to write it all down so I don't forget.

We all have moments such as these in our lives.  Don't let the "what's next" make you miss out on the "what's now."

Oh, and by the way:  although Helen did a pretty fantastic job of holding her own  in the video gaming against the troop of guys, I... didn't fare so well.  As I told them all last night, "I have many talents... and I'm pretty sure this just isn't one of them!"

Up Close & Personal

I recently came across this post at Princess of Something (a blog I follow), and I really enjoyed reading it.  So... I stole it so I could catch you all up on what's new and exciting in MY life... not just what's going on in my life! :)

Current Books: I just finished Finally & Forever  by Robin Jones Gunn.  I didn't even know this book existed, although I was sincerely hoping she would eventually finish off this series with something a little more final.  Great  book!  I'm currently reading Shades of Blue by Karen Kingsbury (which I must say was titled and published LONG before...other... books with similar titles...).  Great book about a couple that overcomes tragic life choices (abortion) and finds the redeeming love and grace of God to change their lives.  I'm also eagerly anticipating reading Coming Home also by Karen Kingsbury, which is the final book in the Baxter books.

Current Playlist: Well... since it's July, and it's a million and seven degrees outside, I'm listening to a lot of Christmas music.  Seriously.  It's one of the quickest ways to cool off!  I'm also listening to Mandisa's new cd & Jamie Grace's new CD.  Oh, yeah, and I'm also listening to Some Nights by Fun.  Because it makes me smile... :)

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Hmmm.... Shame-Inducing?  Well... I can't say there's any of THOSE... but I have been eating a larger portion of ice cream lately due to the previously mentioned weather issue... Like the other night when Helen and I ate almost an entire 1/2 gallon buy ourselves... yeah.

Current Colors: Brights.  Anything that is bright and bold that goes well under a black dress or shirt.  I almost ALWAYS wear black.  Oh!  And bright pink or yellow sandals! :)

Current Fetish: Pinterest.  Just like everyone else out in the cyber webs.

Current Food: Fresh garden veggies!  Cucumbers, Squash, & Greenbeans. Soon, I'll add tomatoes, too!

Current Drink: LOTS of water.  It's rediculous how much water I've consumed lately.  Also, anything iced.  Iced coffee, Iced tea, Iced Grape Koolaid... just make sure you serve it over ice.

Current Favorite Favorite: My new family. The one that lives at the Yellow House by the airport.  I love them!

Current Wishlist: Enough money to afford my own place.

Current Needs: None.  All I have need of, God has provided!

Current Triumph: It should have worn off by now concerning the "triumphant" feeling, but sticking with my June Cleanse for two whole weeks (mostly the excercising) still makes me feel like a winner.

Current Bane of my Existence: Hmmm... I would tell you, but I can't.  Anyone that has spent much time at all with me over the last month and a half knows the name of this person...

Current Indulgence: Iced Coffee.  If I make it at home, I either a) make chocolate macadamia nut coffee & add White Chocolate macadamia creamer or b) make regular dark roast coffee & add Almond Joy creamer.  IF I treat myself to Starbucks, I either do the Mocha Coconut OR the Peppermint Mocha. Or sometimes I treat myself to a Caramel Mocha Frappe from McDonald's and think of my daddy while I drink it!

Current Mood: Honestly? Bored.  But also relaxed!  It's a 3-person day in the office! :)

Current #1 Blessing: Two families that adore & love me!  Couldn't ask for more than that!  Also that I didn't get headlice... That almost trumps the two familiy thing... LOL

Current Slang or Saying: Saying "Can I get the bugspray on that?" when asking for the details of something.

Current Picture: from this weekend...at the park... with part of my adopted family & my for-real sister... and also, I didn't center it very well... hence my missing chin... :P
